Severe storms cause damage in Majorca

A severe storm raged on the Balearic Islands, with torrential rain and gale force winds wreaking havoc in Majorca.

On Sunday August 27th, many tourists saw their holiday break turn into chaos. Holidaymakers were stranded at the airport as strong thunderstorms passed over the islands, causing damage.

In particular, on the island's capital, Palma, the storm whipped up wind gusts of 75 mph.

The storm tore down numerous trees, even a hotel canopy flew through the air, as the video above shows. Power outages occurred in two communities west of Palma.

Many flights cancelled

Air traffic was temporarily affected by the storm as dozens of flights were cancelled, affecting hundreds of passengers.

Following these delays, air traffic control was also halted across the entirety of the UK and Ireland on Bank Holiday Monday, worsening the situation for people trying to get back home.

Those who did travel at the time, were met with a very turbulent situation on a flight to Majorca on Sunday. Storm damage also occurred on Ibiza and Menorca.

The Port Authority called all ships, ferries and boats ashore around the Balearic Islands due to the weather conditions being too dangerous to remain at sea.

Still, a P&O Britania cruise ship collided with a freight ship as it broke free from moorings amidst the storm.

Meanwhile, in Illetes, in Calviá, Majorca, two children were blown away on a lilo by strong winds at sea. Rescue workers were fortunately able to save them unharmed.

In the strength of the wind, the waves can be up to six meters high, and the waters north and east of Menorca are particularly dangerous.
