Final supermoon and two meteor showers

November astro outlook
Final supermoon and two meteor showers

November is not the busiest month for our skies, but brings two meteor showers and a fourth supermoon of the year.

EventDate
New MoonNovember 1st
Taurid Meteor ShowerNovember 4th-5th
SupermoonNovember 15th
Leonid Meteor ShowerNovember 17th-18th

Kicking off the month is a New Moon on November 1st. As with every New Moon, the skies will be darker and clearer, allowing better visibility to the stars above.

Those stars will be shooting on the night of November 4th, as the Taurid Meteor Shower reaches its peak.

This is an unusual shower, with two streams. The first consisting of dust from an asteroid, followed by comet debris. Active until December 10th, this shower doesn't produce the most meteors but following a New Moon should be easier to spot.

Shortly after, the fourth, and final, supermoon of 2024 rises on November 15th. Traditionally, this full moon is known as the Beaver Moon, as named by Native Americans. Our lunar companion will appear brighter and larger in the sky.

Which is not great news for those wanting to see the Leonid Meteor Shower as it peaks on the 17th. Bright moon light will mask all but the brightest meteors in this shower, which runs until the 30th.

The Leonids are a unique event with a cyclonic peak, which means hundreds of meteors arrive every 33 years, with the last peak of this nature occurring in 2001.
