At least 37 people have died in Morocco following heavy rainfall and flooding. The coastal province of Safi, south-west of Casablanca, was particularly affected.

Photos and videos from the region show large areas of residential neighbourhoods flooded, houses and shops underwater, and cars swept away by the floods.

Rescue workers were in constant action, rescuing survivors from the floodwaters and continuing to search for missing persons.

New floods loom

A low-pressure system over Spain is bringing heavy rainfall to Morocco once again. This is likely to cause further flooding.

By Wednesday, more than 50 mm per square metre is possible, especially in the north-west of the country. In some parts of the Atlas Mountains, up to 100 mm is possible. Snow is falling at higher altitudes.
