A powerful low-pressure system is currently developing over the Atlantic, bringing unsettled weather to Ireland, the UK, and parts of Europe.

Heavy rain is falling, particularly in the south-west and west of the continent. This is likely to alleviate the drought, at least to some extent.

In the south of France, heavy rain and thunderstorms are even on the way. In some areas there, between 200 and 400 mm of rain is possible by the end of the week, heightening the risk of flooding.

In Iceland, Ireland, and parts of the UK the wind is picking up noticeably. Storm-force gusts are possible, particularly in south-western Ireland and the Scottish Highlands. On Iceland’s south coast, there may even be gale-force gusts.

In Eastern Europe, however, a high-pressure system remains in control. There, the weather is set to remain mostly sunny and dry well into October.
