Extreme glacier melting in Switzerland

The glaciers in the Alps are currently melting at a record pace. Weeks of heat, Saharan dust and rain up to the highest altitudes are the cause.

After the extreme melting years of 2022 and 2023, there is also a threat of severe glacier melting this year too.

This is despite the fact that there was still around 30% more snow in the Swiss Alps at the end of May, than the long-term average.

You can see on the TemperatureRadar below just how high temperatures are going to be in the coming days.

Even on the peaks of the Swiss Alps, temperatures will remain above freezing in the coming days (green shades indicate 0°C to 10°C).
