Elongated summer!
Omega weather pattern grips Europe

Omega weather patternThe Omega weather pattern involves multiple pressure systems influencing our weather.

A large-scale weather phenomenon is affecting the weather over much of Europe. The so-called omega weather pattern has different effects in different regions. For us, that means more sun and summer!

Autumn is here, but summer weather seems to be taking revenge after an underwhelming July. Almost everywhere in Europe, the coming week will see sunshine as far as the eye can see, with highs approaching 30°C in the UK.

The maximum of 13 hours of sunshine per day will be reached almost everywhere. As our TemperatureRadar shows, many areas in Central Europe will also enjoy highs of up to 30 degrees.

We can thank the "omega weather pattern" for the weather. A phenomenon visible on weather maps of high altitudes. That's why meteorologists like to look at the atmosphere at an altitude of 5.5 kilometres, as the map above shows.

Since Monday, the high pressure system over Central Europe continues to gain more and more strength. It is flanked by a low near Portugal and a low over Greece.

The high pressure between the two lows is more or less blocked or stuck. The weather over Central Europe therefore comes to a standstill, as the lows and highs barely move.

What are the effects?

Once an omega weather situation has occurred, it can be expected to last for several days, maybe even weeks, as the systems block each other. Where the high pressure is located, the weather is calm with plenty of sunshine.

However, where the low pressure areas are located, it's a completely different situation. In these regions, it's mostly unstable and anything but summer-like. The low pressure over Greece is even developing into a severe weather situation.

Holidaymakers should therefore keep a close eye on the weather in the Aegean countries in the coming days.
