Damage in the north - Italy still facing severe weather

Damage in the north
Italy still facing severe weather

Violent thunderstorms left a trail of destruction across Italy's Po Valley on Wednesday. The storms were caused by several so-called supercells – the most dangerous type of thunderstorm.

Did you know?

Supercells have a rotating updraught at the centre of the cloud. This enables them to produce particularly large hailstones, torrential rain, and severe gusts of wind.

Between Milan and Verona, the storms tore roofs off buildings. In the Veneto region, hailstones up to 7 cm in diameter caused considerable damage.

Wednesday's WeatherRadar shows the severe thunderstorms in northern Italy.

Lombardy and Piedmont were also severely affected by hail, gusts of wind, and heavy rain reported across the regions.
