Change is in the air
A 20C difference in temperatures!

sw air flow

After seeing some of the lowest temperatures since December 2010, temperatures have since risen over 20 degrees in places over the weekend.

A mild south-westerly air flow has replaced the bitter northerlies, with a shift from a bright winter wonderland to a dull, soggy scene.

On the morning of Monday December 19th, several places across the UK and Ireland were recording exceptionally mild temperatures, such as 14.7C at Rhyl in Denbighshire, 13.9C at Magilligan No 2 in County Derry, 13.4C at Shannon Airport.

At Trawscoed in Wales, temperatures went from -9C on Saturday morning to 13C at 11pm Sunday night, making a 22C rise in temperatures over the weekend.

The nature of this air mass has also brought significant amounts of rainfall for some, especially on south-facing hills in the south-west of England.

Here are some of the rainfall totals reported so far in South Devon:

  • Whitebarrow, Dartmoor 161mm
  • Cornwood 73.3mm
  • Lee Moor 69.3mm
  • Plympton 55.7mm

Skies will at least clear to allow for a sunny day tomorrow, Tuesday December 20th, though only briefly, because rain is never too far away! Keep an eye out for our Christmas forecast coming later.
