Heat versus constant rain - Extreme weather contrasts in Europe

Heat versus constant rain
Extreme weather contrasts in Europe

As the first week of autumn draws to a close, Europe is showing two completely different sides. Across much of the Iberian Peninsula, it feels like summer, elsewhere it is distinctly autumnal.

Temperatures will locally exceed 40°C in parts of Spain and Portugal. From the south of France through Italy to Greece, temperatures will repeatedly hit highs between 30 and 35°C.

Further north, the situation is quite different: powerful low-pressure systems are sweeping across the region from the UK through Central Europe to the Baltic states, bringing rain and, in places, stormy winds.

What’s more, with maximum temperatures often reaching just 15 to 20°C, the air is already delivering the chillier feel of the new season.
