Breakfast brief
Cold start, rain turns freezing later

A freezing start for many in the UK, as rain pushes over Ireland, turning snowy for Wales and England into Saturday.

Kickstarting your day

Welcome to the Breakfast Brief, your first forecast for the day and a chance to catch up on what you may have missed.

Weather outlook

It's a cold start along with temperatures around or just above freezing over large parts of the UK from northern Scotland to southern England. Warmer in Ireland, with highs of 13°C in Tralee.

A band of rain starts the day pushing across Ireland and south-west England. Later, and into Saturday, this turns to sleet or wet snow over parts of the north and east, with a risk of local freezing rain over higher ground.

Some stiff winds accompany the rain, up to 40 mph in south-west England including Plymouth, but ease later in the day.
