Preparing the home for winter weather

Two people wrap up warm against the cold

We’ve had a taste of winter weather this week, but how should you prepare the home for when winter does truly arrive?

With the price of heating still high, it’s vital that you take action now to help reduce costs in winter. Start by checking over the home looking for draughts from doors, windows, even a loft hatch where heat could be lost.

If you are already turning to the heating, be sure to check if radiators are in need of bleeding to help them operate at their most efficient level.

With winter comes severe weather, which can often lead to power cuts. Prepare a power cut kit now to ensure you are ready if the worst happens.

This could include torches or candles, blankets to keep warm, a power bank to keep mobile phones charged if help is needed, first aid supplies, and something to keep yourself entertained with until power is restored.

Before the severe conditions hit, you may wish to have your roof checked by a professional to ensure it is in good condition.

When the chill gets too much, and it is time to reach for the thermostat, try experimenting with slightly lower temperatures.

Reducing your setting even by a single degree could save 10% on energy bills.

Temperatures do rise this weekend, providing a break from the cool conditions. Stay up to date with all the winter weather this season using the WeatherRadar.

Emergency services are clearing up the damage. So, along with the thunderstorms, not only heavy rain but also gusts of wind can become a problem.
