As the nights draw in
Stay safe while driving in the dark

With the clocks turned back, many of us will be driving home after a hard day's work in the dark. While care should be taken when driving at anytime of the year, the autumn and winter seasons present additional challenges.

Scattered, fallen leaves, frost or ice will create slippery conditions with the occurrence of rain, heavy showers or fog also reducing visibility for all road users. Even the setting sun or windy conditions can affect us when we drive.

Should you have to drive when the darkness begins to set in, there are a few things you could do before setting off to keep you and other roads users around you safe.

Start with a quick walk around your vehicle checking all your lights and tyres are in good working condition. Then check your fluids including screen wash and anti-freeze. You should also make sure your windows are clean to reduce glare from the setting sun or other driver's headlights.

While driving, keep an eye out for pedestrians or cyclists who may be wearing dark clothing and are harder to be seen. You should also stay attentive and look out for sudden pools of water or patches of ice that could all play havoc.

Above all, be sensible, safe and stay alert.
