Pink Moon rises ahead of meteor shower

April is a slow news month when it comes to the skies above, but it does provide the first meteor shower of spring towards its close.

EventDate
Full moon (Pink Moon)April 2nd
New moonApril 17th
Lyrids meteor showerApril 22nd-23rd

Starting the month, is the rise of the Pink Moon on April 2nd. April's full moon, was named for its timing alongside spring flowers by Native Americans, specifically forms of pink moss.

A new moon bridges the gap on April 17th, offering darker skies for spotting constellations on cloud-free nights, before the Lyrids reach their peak.

With an average of 20 shooting stars an hour, the Lyrids Meteor Shower are the remnants of a comet discovered in 1861 and can be spotted from April 16th to the 25th.

It will be most active on the night of the 22nd, into the following morning. An early setting moon should provide good viewing conditions away from light pollution.

Check back closer to the time for a full forecast on visibility, and be sure to check the WeatherRadar before any night under the stars to avoid being caught out by overcast skies.
