Around 36°C in places
Heatwave reaches its peak on Thursday

Synoptic weather map of Europe for Thursday 13.08 showing high pressure centered over the UK and nearby western Europe, with clockwise circulation arrows and pressure contours across the continent.
High pressure builds through the week, bringing much hotter air and another heatwave.

Building high pressure through the week pushes temperatures up, and brings the fifth heatwave of the season with highs in the mid-30s once again.

The heat builds to a crescendo on Thursday, in the run-up Tuesday sees highs reaching up to 29°C in southern England while it remains cloudy at times across central to northern Scotland. Cloud pushing into western Ireland may also bring drizzle.

Amber heat-health alerts are active for all regions of England from Tuesday until Friday, with the exception of one yellow alert in the North East. Wednesday sees the thermometers pass 30°C for the first time with highs around 33°C from the English Midlands and further south.

Conditions on the day are mostly clear and sunny, particularly towards the evening offering great visibility to see the solar eclipse.

Air flow

In addition to high pressure trapping hot air, southerly and southwesterly winds this week will drag further hot air towards the UK and Ireland from western Europe.

Thursday brings the peak of this latest heatwave. Highs reaching around 36°C are likely in some parts of central to eastern England and southern Wales. To the north and west it is slightly cooler with cloud cover and some showers at times.

The warmer conditions begin to ease over the weekend, with increasing chances of rain though bringing small amounts that will not help to alleviate drought issues.
