Storm Agnes has just become the first official named storm of the season for the UK and Ireland.

On Wednesday 27th September, a deep area of low pressure will hit the UK and Ireland, bringing an area of strong winds and heavy rain, along with large and dangerous waves.

The storm system has just been officially named Storm Agnes, the first named storm of our autumn/winter season.

It has the potential to bring wind gusts of 50-60 mph inland, over 60-70 mph to Irish Sea coasts, perhaps locally higher in exposed spots.

The storm originally developed in the Atlantic, gathering energy from ex-hurricane Ophelia.

While it is not physically possible for us to see hurricanes or any other tropical systems with tropical status in the UK and Ireland due to our sea surface temperatures, that's not to say that the storm system won't still be destructive or damaging.

We will continue to update this article as the forecast evolves.
