The Atlantic Hurricane Season kicks off today, with a record-breaking number of storms in the forecast.

Last week, the National Hurricane Center released their forecast for the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane season, with a prediction for 17 to 25 storms to be named.

Of which eight to 13 could reach hurricane status and between four and seven could become major hurricanes, category 3 or above.

This is a record high for expected storms, with an 85% chance for an above-average season, driven by sea surface temperatures and the La Niña.

2023 season

The 2023 hurricane season ended with 20 named storms, with seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. The fourth most active season on record.

Sea surface temperatures are expected to be above average, adding fuel to any developing storms to feed from.

In previous years when La Niña and warm sea surface temperatures have combined, we see storms at a higher frequency, and moving more westward, towards the Caribbean, and U.S.
