Gloomy evening with a few spots of rain

Bonfire Night
Gloomy evening with a few spots of rain

Heading out to a public display or planning to celebrate at home? The forecast for the evening is looking dull, but rain is expected to affect only a few areas of the UK.

While smoke from the fireworks and bonfires will add to hazy skies, Thursday will be generally gloomy throughout the day. By around 06:00 pm when displays are starting, the skies are mostly overcast with just a few clearer spots to the west of Scotland and north-west of England.

Rain will linger along the Hampshire and Dorset coasts, and later in the evening showers grow for southern Wales and north-eastern England.

Wind map at 19:00 on 05.11 showing 21 mph near Glasgow, 20 mph near Edinburgh and lighter 7–19 mph winds across the UK and Ireland.
A few gusts, but a generally calm evening ahead.

On the WindRadar, there are few gusts strong enough to send fireworks astray. Slightly stronger gusts are expected along the North Sea coast and areas around the English-Scottish border, mostly over higher ground.

Temperatures will be on the chilly side, hovering in the upper single digits, making it feel noticeably cooler than the mild Bonfire Night last year.

Before you head out for a display, or into the garden, remember to double-check the WeatherRadar for the latest conditions.

The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
