A look at the trend
Will it be a white Christmas?

With less than two weeks to go until Christmas 2024, it is time to look at some early forecast model trends.

The headlines promising all sorts of wintry conditions are becoming ever more common, but it's still early days when it comes to more reliable predictions of snow around Christmas.

If we consider the official definition in the UK, then just one snowflake falling somewhere within the 24 hours of December 25th would be enough for it to become a "technical" white Christmas.

Recent white Christmas Days

2023 saw the last technical white Christmas, 11% of weather stations in the UK recorded snow, 2010 saw the last widespread white Christmas with measurable snow.

The latest model trends for the week of the 21st through Christmas Day suggest high pressure to our south and west, with low pressure just to our north and east.

This means westerly or northwesterly winds would prevail, keeping temperatures around or just above average.

Both models above indicate a westerly airflow with unsettled and rather mild conditions, but with some snow in the far north.

Your best chances for snow will likely be on higher ground in the northern half of the UK according to the latest data. This is likely to change, check our weather trend regularly!
