Winter tips
Protect your pets!

Each year, thousands of pets suffer in the cold from frostbite, hypothermia, or worse. Check our top tips to keep your furry friend safe and warm this winter.

Whilst some breeds can handle the cold better than others, many cannot adapt to the elements and need a little extra protection from their owners.

Experts say it is a myth that dogs and cats can fend for themselves any more than human beings can, and no one enjoys being cold.

Tips to keep your furry friends safe

  • After a wintry walk in snow or ice, it’s important to clear away any ice balls that may collect between your pet’s paws, as they can cause painful freezing or frostbite.
  • Bathe your pets as little as possible during cold spells, it can remove essential oils and increase dryness in their skin
  • Protect their paw pads! Putting petroleum jelly or booties on your pet can prevent grit from getting lodged, and protect against salt or other chemicals on the ground.
  • Check the hood of your car for cats before driving, they like to go there to keep warm.
  • Grab a coat! Smaller or short-haired breeds might benefit from that extra layer.
  • Don't leave your furry friends outdoors for too long, beyond their regular exercise.
  • Stay prepared with emergency food, water and any medication.
