The natural wonders of winter

starling-murm-shutterstockMigrating birds overhead are one of winter's many natural wonders.

Are you tired of being stuck indoors this winter? Perhaps you might like to get out and see some of the natural wonders this season brings to us.

Here in the UK birdwatchers can look forward to seeing migrating species with a bird for everyone where ever you are.

Somerset will see the murmuration of starlings peaking at this time of the year while Northern Ireland, Strangford Lough hosts three-quarters of the world’s population of light-bellied brent geese.

For something a little more bizarre, anyone heading to Italy could check out the artificial lake Reschensee. Noted for the exposed steeple of a 14th-century church which peeks above the water and can be reached on foot as the lake freezes in these winter months.

One of the natural wonders of the world, the Aurora Borealis is visible at other times of the year but especially spectacular in winter.

Scandinavia and the Arctic Circle are ideal places but closer to home the Northern Lights can be spotted in the Scottish Highlands and Scottish Isles.
