September delivers two eclipses, though not fully visible in the UK and Ireland. Otherwise, we welcome the arrival of autumn too with the equinox!

Full moonSeptember 7th
Total lunar eclipseSeptember 7th
New MoonSeptember 21st
Partial solar eclipseSeptember 21st
Autumnal equinoxSeptember 22nd

September begins with an extravagant display as a total lunar eclipse arrives on the 7th with the Corn Moon. From the UK and Ireland, this eclipse will be only partly visible, the full eclipse reserved for across Asia.

We then enter a quieter spell until the new moon on the 21st, which also sees a partial solar eclipse. Though only for a very small area around New Zealand and Antarctica.

The following day, autumn truly arrives with the autumnal equinox on the 22nd. Signalling the beginning of astronomical autumn.
