Not for UK & IE though...
Hottest June on record globally

air temperature anomaly June 2024

June 2024 has come in as the hottest on record globally, not that it felt much like it living in the UK and Ireland.

June 2024 was a scorcher, breaking records as the hottest June globally since records began. The average temperature hit 16.66°C, which is 0.67°C higher than the typical June from 1991-2020 and a notch above the previous June record in 2023.

13 consecutive record-breaking months

This makes it the thirteenth straight month to set a record for its respective month. We last saw a streak like this back in 2015/2016.

June 2024 was 1.5°C warmer than the June average from the pre-industrial era (1850-1900). This means we've now had twelve consecutive months where temperatures hit or surpassed the 1.5°C mark.

Over the past year (July 2023 - June 2024), the global average temperature has been the highest ever, sitting at 0.76°C above the 1991-2020 norm and 1.64°C above the pre-industrial average.

Europe warmer than average, but not all of it

In Europe, June 2024 was 1.57°C warmer than the average June from 1991-2020, tying for the second warmest June on record.

Southeast Europe and Turkey felt the heat the most, while parts of western Europe, Iceland, and north-western Russia stayed cooler, as we well know being in the UK and Ireland.

Beyond Europe however, the heatwave spread to eastern Canada, the western US and Mexico, Brazil, northern Siberia, the Middle East, northern Africa, and western Antarctica.

Record high sea temperatures

The sea surface temperature for June 2024 averaged 20.85°C, the hottest ever on record for the month. This marks the fifteenth consecutive month of record-high SSTs.
